 Who is this for?

12 - 15 year olds who are open to learning to learn. Prior coding experience not a requirement.
8 - 11 year olds who have completed at least one module set at LCCL Coding Academy.

 What is Learning to Learn: Arduino?

In this course, learning Arduino is not the primary goal; it is only a means to an end. Our goal is to use the Arduino platform to help students learn how to learn, learn problem solving skills, and learn how to think in questions. In the process, students build confidence in making and tinkering with their hands using electronics and micro-controller programming as the tools.

Students are faciliated to formulate problems, finding solutions, tinker, code and bring their solutions to fruition.

  • Tinkering with LEDs
  • Tinkering with motors
  • Tinkering with buzzers
  • Creating a game

 

 About the Facilitator

Mr Then Thai Wey

Thai Wey is a 17-year Silicon Valley veteran who believes that the best way to learn is by doing. 

  • Awarded the National Computer Board (NCB) Scholarship
  • Graduated with a Bachelor and a Master degree from Purdue University with a GPA of 4.0/4.0 in Computer And Electrical Engineering
  • Joined Information Technology Institute (R&D arm of National Computer Board) as Member of Technical Staff in 1995
  • Moved to California and co-founded a Silicon Valley startup (ThirdVoice) in 1998, Sequoia and DFJ were the 2 lead investors
  • Joined Apple, Inc in 2001 as a senior software engineer in the QuickTime group. Worked on the media sub-system of the operating system on macOS, iOS, and tvOS.
  • Left Apple and moved back to Singapore in 2015
  • Presently, Thai Wey is an entrepreneur-in-residence at Nanyang Technological University (NTU), helping to mentor students in entrepreneurship, develop potential startup ideas, and teaches Arduino in a unique project-based course called Making and Tinkering.
  • Teaches Arduino as a platform for learning problem solving skills to secondary and junior college students as part of an outreach program by NTU.

 Minimum Requirements

Open-minded students who are ready to embrace an empowering form of learning, that is: learning to learn.

 

 Laptops

All participants are encouraged to bring their own laptops. This is so that students are able to  practice and complete optional coding challenges at home. Recommended laptop specification: Windows 7 / 8 / 10, Mac OS X or Linux, with at least 4 GB RAM.

If you do not have a personal laptop, LCCL Coding Academy provides laptops for use at the school. Please indicate your laptop needs during registration.

What's the refund policy?

All registrations are non-refundable. If the student has to miss a class due to unforeseen circumstance, we will do our best to help get the student up to speed again.

My child is younger/older than the required age. May they join the course?

My child does not have a laptop. Does the school provide any?
